Hamlet's Mill: An Essay Investigating the Origins of Human Knowledge And Its Transmission Through Myth

In this classic work of scientific and philosophical inquiry, the authors track world myths to a common origin in early man's descriptions of cosmological activity, arguing that these remnants of ancient astronomy, suppressed by the Greeks and Romans and then forgotten, were really a form of preliterate science. Myth became the synapse by which science was transmitted. Their truly original thesis challenges basic assumptions of Western science and theories about the transmission of knowledge."A book wonderful to read and startling to contemplate. If this theory is correct, both the history of science and the reinterpretation of myths have been enriched immensely." - Washington Post Book World

I gave this book 5 stars because this is an exhaustive compendium of mythological knowledge in one short (505 pages) volume. It is professorial in writing design, which includes excerpts in Latin, French and German, as well as the many words and phrases from India, Mesopotamia, northern Europe, Pacifiic islands and so forth. I recommend reading the appendices in the order they are referred to in the main text. I read them last and did not glean an understanding that accompanied the chapters. All in all, this is a researcher's book with 29 pages of bibliography material, with extensive notes at the bottom of the pages so one can stay on text. Good luck and enjoy the perusal of mythology, astronomy/astrology, history, poetry and fable. Great reading!

I could use a separate book to explain to me what I just read. This is some deep stuff.

As many have noted, Hamlet's Mill is not an "easy" read, but it is an absolutely worthwhile experience not only to read but to re-read this seminal thesis on the transmission of ancient astronomical knowledge through mythology and legend. Perhaps the fact that a reader must wrestle with this text is part of the reason that it has generated so many fruitful inquiries and theories by later authors. The entire book is rich with ideas, many of which the authors drop and then pick up again and again later in the text, some of which are simply left for later analysts to pursue further on their own. Slice into it at any point and you will find a rich vein of material that can suggest new avenues for you to explore in the ancient history and literatures of the world. Sometimes an easy read or a text that hands you all of its answers and does the work for you is not "what the doctor ordered." Hamlet's Mill definitely makes more sense the second and even third time through. That in and of itself makes this book worth your while -- it's a gift that keeps on giving, a book you can keep on reading, even after you reach the end!

Didn't know what to expect but the authors were not pedantic. One needs quite a background in world mythology. Got the gist of it though. Something really bad happened to cause the precession of equinoxes in the distant past. Mythology treats this event using metaphors that could be understood in pre-history times. There are enough megaliths extant to lead one to believe that there was a high civilization in being at the time of the great cataclysm.

Great book but it is unnecessarily dense and tough going...but it you are intested in the great procession this is your go-to book...though it is quite dated.

This is one a unique book. The "story" has been all along, and in many different cultures. Lets pay attention. If you are serious about history, or myths, is a "must read".

I first learned about this book in Graham Hancock's Fingerprints of the Gods. De Santillana has a way with words but the thread comes through that all myths worldwide speak of the same event: the Precession of the equinoxes. Myth is like the language of dreams: though apparently nonsensical, it tells of something beyond the meaning of its words or images. But still, where does the knowledge of the precession of the equinoxes come from? De Santillana does not delve into this mystery, leaving it perhaps to Hancock and Sitchin to solve.

Read this a couple years ago, but it was out of print for a while, and I immediately bought a copy when it was back in print. It's definitely a book worth reading and having in your collection. Every now and then I read it bits and pieces again. Its a really, really good book!
