This book is a sensible choice for someone considering doing heat treating of steel at home or in a small shop. There is a reasonable basic explanation of the theory, though not in the detail you can find in texts aimed at industrial users. There is quite a bit of practical advice on small-shop methods, which is not well-covered in industrial books.By the way, the web page for the book says the author is George Gently, but the book cover says Tubal Cain.
This book arrived ahead of schedule and I was pleasantly surprised that the author is one who I follow on YouTube. I found detailed answers to every question I have and a load of answers to questions I haven’t thought of. It is loaded with technical stuff, some of which may take me years to understand. It will surely become well used and dog eared in no time!
Great treatise on heat treating. Technical enough so I understood the WHY of heat treating, but not so dense that I couldn't read it. He also describes how to build several different heat treating ovens, which I found very useful.
It would be a good introductory test to tempering, but I was looking for more detail. The terminology is all British, as is the author. I speak metric just fine, but I am stuck with SAE steels and the author is stuck with British or Euro designations.
This is a great book for the home machinist. It's the best book I've read on heat treating. A must for the home machinist bookshelf.
This is a practical book. I have read about half of it. If you have a way to heat steel to the hardening temp.with a magnet and be able to temper the steel using a rosebud heater or a forge, this book is for you.
Written I think by an English author so some phrases are a little weird...my only real complaint was the tiny print font. I definitely needed my reading glasses for this one!
I found this book lacking in what I was looking for in a users guide. It lacks seriously in the Workshop Practice IMO.I was hoping for more practical data and instruction on how to achieve hardening and tempering for a less than controlled furnace environment for the more amateur user. I could get all the info contained here in internet search so I am dissapointed in the book . I think the title is somewhat misleading.
