This book was recommended to me by a coworker and I actually enjoyed reading it. It's a short, easy read with lots of graphics and simple, practical instructions on how to facilitate impact mapping.I gave it 4 stars only because the first 3/4ths of the book were all a bit fluffy, explaining the benefits and methodologies applied in great detail without explaining how or what you do in impact mapping. The last quarter really spelled out the info you needed.I would have preferred the ratio reversed - there were many questions and more details I would like to learn without picking up another book. Luckily the writer cited plenty of material for me to begin exploring!Glad I read this - I really needed a tool like this for my current project at work.

I started using impact mapping with the Kanbanery team almost two years ago, based on a blog post I'd read, and found it immediately helpful in identifying the connections between the work we were doing and the outcomes we expected. The approach addresses many of the problems I've seen with agile web development, which include chasing vanity metrics, adding unnecessary clutter (features that don't achieve their desired results but stay in anyway), and whim-driven design.In this short book, Gojko describes the tool, why it works, how to use it, how not to use it, and then he kindly walks you through the entire agenda for an impact mapping meeting, explaining how to conduct the meeting and what to expect from each step.There's no fluff here, just clear instructions on how to use this powerful tool for getting the best results from your product development effort.I highly recommend it.
I'm in the early stages of a potentially huge project and had the good fortune to have someone point me towards this book. It has given me both the tools and process to properly plan my project, involve stakeholders and generate a shared vision. How happy am I! Short, practical and extremely valuable. If you're planning a project of any kind, this is worth your time and money as it might just save you a fortune and improve you're standing in your business in one hit as you lead a successful project with transparency!
I think the book is great for fulfilling its promise - give a short guide to the impact mapping technique with further references. It's good that it's short as it keeps focus. At the same time, it covers everything important: the idea, the benefits, the how-to and the pitfalls.I would recommend it to everyone interested in agile management practices. This should not be restricted to managers. Engineers might find the book useful as well because everyone should make good decisions on the scope of an agile product, especially in small teams.I assume the technique should be usable in many areas, not just software. I don't see anything software-specific in the book. Any goal oriented business following agile management approach should find impact mapping useful.

This book melds many of the concepts of Lean and Agile into a process that yields a useful product roadmap based upon business needs and technical capabilities. The process brings business, product, project and delivery people together in a forum that encourages communication and innovative thinking and discourages "everything is priority #1" thinking.Eric Ries' "Lean Startup" is a wonderful book, but it left me wondering how to implement his concepts. This book brought it all together for me -- Agile, Lean and the Lean Startup.Pro:- clearly written- to the point- lots of references to additional information (and acknowledgement of other thinkers)Con:- none
Impact Mapping is a buzzword in agile/lean community in recent years. The book clearly explains why we need impact mapping. But this is merely just a "spiritual guideline" and needed lots of practice and examples to get the essence of it. And this is the part where this book falls short.
